Key Trends from the 2008 ASTI regional report on Central America

  • Given the persistence of weak government agricultural R&D, higher education and nongovernmental institutions have come to the fore as leaders of the country’s R&D agenda.
  • In 2006, Honduras employed 124 fte agricultural R&D staff, half of whom were trained to the BSc level.
  • Agricultural R&D expenditures in Honduras decreased during 1991-2006, reaching $11 million (in 2005 PPP prices) in 2006.
  • FHIA is by far the largest agency in Honduras in terms of agricultural R&D spending. Its annual spending levels fluctuated widely in recent years.
  • FHIA generates the vast majority of its income through service contracts.
