Agricultural research was one of the main drivers behind the enormous increases in food production in the Indo-Pacific during the 20th century. Ensuring agricultural productivity growth and food security in the coming decades—especially in light of climate change—will require sustained investment in agricultural research. Stakeholders in agricultural research need reliable and up-to-date data to analyze research investment and capacity trends, identify key gaps, set future investment priorities, and ensure effective coordination and coherence of agricultural research initiatives./

The Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) Indo-Pacific project, facilitated by the Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), empowers partners in the region to collect time series data on the funding, human resource capacity, and outputs of agricultural research in countries in the Indo-Pacific. The project supports the production of analysis, capacity-building tools, and outreach products to help facilitate policies for effective and efficient agricultural research.

ASTI is widely recognized as the authoritative source of information on the status and direction of agricultural research systems in developing countries.
