Key Trends from the 2008 ASTI regional report on Central America

• Agricultural R&D in El Salvador is largely a government affair, with CENTA accounting for the bulk of the country's agricultural research staff and expenditures.
• Total capacity in Salvadorian agricultural R&D has fallen sharply in recent years to 77 fte's in 2006.
• Agricultural R&D staff in El Salvador is the least qualified of Central America. Close to 80% of the country's researchers are trained to the BSc level.
• Total agricultural R&D spending in El Salvador nearly halved between 1991 and 2006.
• Unlike some of its donor-dependent neighbors, El Salvador's agricultural R&D agencies are largely dependent on government support.
