Key Trends

• Agricultural R&D in the Dominican Republic is dominated by IDIAF, the national agricultural research institute.
• Agricultural research staff totals have dropped in recent years, reaching 139 fte's in 2006. 
• Agricultural R&D expenditures, on the other hand, increased in recent years and totalled $17 million (in 2005 PPP prices) in 2006.
• IDIAF receives most of its funding from the Dominican government. Foreign donors and internally generated resources constitute the remainder of the institute's funding.
• The private sector plays a relatively important role in agricultural R&D in the Dominican Republic.
